Workshop: Exploring Theme (April 27th) - from iO Chicago

$35.00

Each class is limited to 16 students.

Where does inspiration come from in an improv show, and what do you do with it once you find it? The power of saying something larger than the sum of our parts on stage rarely comes from taking suggestions literally, rather from a knack for detecting theme.

This workshop will run you through several different long-form improv formats performed onstage in Chicago and teach you the best practices for creating your own.

Bio:

James Dugan took his first improv class when he was 12 years old and has been in love with it ever since. He has performed on cruise ships with The Second City, was an ensemble member of TJ and Dave’s Mission Theater and can currently be seen in Chicago with The Armando Diaz Experience, Hitch*Cocktails, Clued In, and Whirled News Tonight. He has been featured in comedy festivals in Austin, St. Louis, New York and Juneau and also co-hosted the popular improviser interview podcast, Talking Shop.

Gretchen Eng has worked in the Chicago comedy community since her salad days in the Second City Teen Ensemble. Following a brief stint studying classical voice and doing sketch comedy at Vassar College, she has been a producer and performer at iO for ten years, specifically with Devil's Daughter, The Armando Diaz Experience, and in her duo Jaymes Gretchky. She is a professor in Roosevelt University's Chicago College of Performing Arts, teaches all levels of the training center at iO, coaches, and designs curricula for an array of corporate, non-profit, and educational organizations as the Director of Professional Development and Partnerships for the theater.
